A wind advisory is in effect for the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea summits through 6 p.m. Monday.
An upper-level trough passing north of the state will maintain strong northwest winds across the Big Island’s summits, National Weather Service forecasters said. The strongest winds are expected during the morning hours with winds gradually decreasing during the afternoon.
Forecasters are calling for northwest winds of 45 mph to 55 mph with gusts up to 65 mph for the summit areas above 8,000 feet in elevation.
Motorists, especially those in high-profile vehicles, are urged to drive with extreme caution.
The Mauna Kea access road was open to the public as of Monday morning.
