An additional three cases of dengue fever were confirmed on the Big Island Friday, bringing the total case count to 233, state health officials said.
As many as three of cases remain potentially infectious to mosquitoes, officials said. Of the confirmed cases, 211 are Hawaii Island residents and 22 are visitors. Forty-three of the cases have occurred in children younger than age 18, according to the state Department of Health. The last onset of illness was Jan. 17.
Since the start of the outbreak, 977 reported potential cases have been excluded based on test results and/or not meeting case criteria.
Dengue is a virus that is transmitted from an infected person to a mosquito, which can then infect another person.
