Waiaha School sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders leave Wednesday to compete in the regional STEM competition in San Diego. Pictured with their teachers, Dawn Johansen (front right) and Julie Prado (back left), students received a giant $1,000 check Tuesday from Walmart manager John Yates and his associates to help with trip expenses.
Students are from left to right: India Richert, Ella Prado, Austin Randerson, Josiah Richards, Logan Russell, Malachi Lehmann, Josiah Kenney, Sandra Carson, and Mary Johansen. The competition involves sharing a 3-D scale model made entirely of recycled material, design engineering sketches, and a seven-minute speech titled “Waste Not, Want Not: Kona in a 100 years.”
