The Department of Parks and Recreation has announced its 2016 maintenance closure schedule for Kahaluu Beach Park and Spencer Park.
Kahaluu Beach Park will be closed until 10 a.m. on either the first or second Tuesday of each month. The specific closure dates are: Jan. 12, Feb. 9, March 8, April 5, May 3, June 7, July 12, Aug. 2, Sept. 13, Oct. 4, Nov. 1 and Dec. 6.
Spencer Park will be closed all day on Jan. 13, 14, Feb. 10, 11, March 9, 10, April 6, 7, May 10-12, Sept. 13-15, Oct. 5, 6, Nov. 16, 17, Dec. 7, 8.

APAC operations director to address Kiwanis

The Mauna Kea Soil and Water Conservation District will meet from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service Waimea Service Center, 67-1185 Mamalahoa Highway, Suite 148.

Imiloa presentation focuses
on black holes
What do we know about the phenomenon of black holes in the universe? The public is invited to join Dr. Andreea Petric of Gemini Observatory in exploring “The Very Hungry Black Hole” at Imiloa Astronomy Center’s next Maunakea Skies program at 7 p.m. Friday.
The program will be hosted by Imiloa Planetarium Technician, Emily Peavy, who will provide observational highlights of the current night sky over Hawaii.
Imiloa’s monthly Maunakea Skies planetarium presentations are held on the third Friday of each month. Cost is $8 for individual, dual, kupuna and family members; $6 for patron members; free for silver, gold and corporate members and $10 for nonmembers. Purchase tickets at the Imiloa front desk or by calling 932-8901.
Advocats meeting, spay and neuter clinic planned
AdvoCats will hold its general meeting at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kona Vistas community center on Pualani Street off of Lako Street. AdvoCats is a Hawaii County endorsed nonprofit trap-neuter-return organization committed to solving the homeless cat problem in a humane way.
On the meeting’s agenda is a spay and neuter clinic to be held Jan. 20 in Kona. Those who have cats that need to be trapped, spayed or neutered and returned may call 327-3724 or advocatshawaii.org.
The organization is seeking volunteers and also accepts ink cartridges for recycling.
