The Kona Historical Society’s Portuguese Stone Oven Bread Baking program, normally scheduled every Thursday, will be closed on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve in observance of the holidays. The bakings have been alternately scheduled for Wednesdays, Dec. 23 and 30.
The Kona Historical Society’s Portuguese Stone Oven is a reproduction of a typical oven used by the Portuguese immigrants who came to Kona in the 1880s. The public can join the process of panning the dough and baking close to 100 loaves from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The program is free and the bread is $8 per loaf. Bring a lunch and make a day of it with an oven-side picnic in the pasture.

BISAC conducts giving campaign
During this season of giving, the Big Island Substance Abuse Council participated in its annual giving campaign.
BISAC’s Pregnant Parent with Children’s program provides treatment services focused on women and their children and offers a safe and nurturing foundation for children to grow. This program provides an opportunity for mothers to reclaim their lives from the ravages of addiction. Every year, during the holiday season, BISAC celebrates these women and their children by providing gifts to help make the season extra special.

Nahalea to lead Kam Schools’ regional strategies
Kamehameha Schools has named Albert “Alapaki” Nahalea as senior director of regional strategies for Hawaii Island. The new position is part of the Community Engagement and Resources Group, a new addition to the KS organizational structure, working to connect programs, services, lands and resources with communities KS interacts with and helps support.
Most recently, Nahalea served as director of the Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School and currently serves on the Presidential Scholars Commission, appointed by President Barack Obama.
Nahalea started in his new role on Nov. 16 and oversees all CE&R operations for West and East Hawaii. As senior director, Nahalea is tasked with facilitating the formation of the East Hawaii regional structure, a key action item of CE&R’s strategic goals for its Strategic Plan 2020 (SP2020). He is also responsible for the effective coordination and execution of new and existing programs and initiatives implemented as part of the new plan.
