A high surf advisory has been extended for north-facing shores of the Big Island northern and eastern coasts through Friday evening, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
Wave heights of 12 to 18 feet are forecast through 6 p.m., forecasters said.
Forecasters categorized the surf’s impact as “moderate,” cautioning of strong breaking waves, shore break and longshore and rip currents that can make swimming dangerous. Beachgoers are advised to heed all advice given by ocean safety officials.
A larger northwest swell is still on tap to arrive Saturday from a storm low currently located south of the Aleutian Islands, forecasters said Friday morning. Forecasters expect to issue a warning for north- and west-facing later Friday.
