A truck dropped 20 feet into a lava pit after a collision with an SUV on Highway 19 near the 83 mile marker about 2 p.m. Wednesday.
A Smitty’s Shotcrete Ford truck was headed southbound when it collided with a northbound green Explorer Sport. The truck crossed over the road after the collision and continued off the road. It hit a ramp-like shape in the lava and dropped about 20 feet into the pit, which is about 12 feet deep. The SUV continued north, rolling and scattering plastic parts of the body for yards. It came to rest partway off the roadway against a small ridge.
The driver and passenger in the SUV were taken to area hospitals, as was the driver of the truck. Injury status was unknown by press time. The cause of the crash remains under investigation and police periodically closed lanes on the highway.
