A wind advisory remains in effect for the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea summits until 6 p.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
The service forecast southwest winds around 35 mph to 50 mph with localized gusts topping 65 mph for areas above 8,000 feet in elevation.
The Mauna Kea Weather Center reports that the Mauna Kea access road is closed at the Visitor Information Station this morning because of black ice and snow. The current temperature at the summit was 28.3 degrees as of 6:55 a.m. Wednesday.
A wind advisory means that strong winds are expected. Motorists are advised to use caution while driving in the affected area. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.
