HONOLULU (AP) — A man has been charged with assault in connection to the violent attack of a woman in front of Honolulu Community College.
Khammouane Thong, who was also booked for two warrants, was arrested Monday. His bail has been set at $1,000.
Police said a 21-year-old female student was attacked Monday morning. According to college officials, the incident occurred at a bus stop near the school and involved a homeless man known to frequent the area.
HCC vice chancellor Derek Inafuku said students and faculty were alerted immediately after the attack.
“We had email and text messages going out to all faculty and students,” he said.
The school currently has four security guards for the 8,200 students on campus. Inafuku said the school will soon double its number of security guards.
“We also hired private guard service to assist for private escort for students to their cars,” he added.
Some students told KHON-TV (https://bit.ly/1Oktm7i) that they generally feel safe on campus, but not at the surrounding bus stops where the attack took place.
“When I’m off campus, trying to get on the bus stop, there’s a lot of homeless people. I get kind of scared. It’s sketchy walking around,” said student Jadyn Razon.
