A flash flood watch has been posted for the Big Island through 6 a.m. Wednesday.
Forecasters with the National Weather Service said Tuesday the watch was prompted by an extremely moist and unstable atmosphere over the state that is expected to support slow-moving heavy downpours that could lead to flash flooding. Some of the showers will be capable of dropping two to three inches of rain in a very short period of time.
Excessive runoff could produce flooding even in areas where heavy rain is not occurring. Landslides will also be possible in areas of steep terrain, forecasters cautioned.
On Monday, heavy rainfall resulted in flash flooding around the island that prompted road closures, evacuations and rescues. Click here for details on road closures and evacuations. Click here for details on the rescue of 14 people near Waipio Valley.
