The State of Hawaii Junior Lifeguard Championships were held at Hapuna Beach on the island of Hawaii on Saturday with over 200 junior lifeguards from around the state participating.
The overall final team results were as follows:1. Kauai (712 points); 2. Oahu (636); 3. Hawaii (543); 4. Maui (357).
The competition consisted of a 1000 meter beach run; Iron Guard (500 meter beach run, 200 meter swim, 200 meter paddle board); 200 meter swim; 100 meter Run Swim Run; Beach Flags; and a five person paddle board relay.
Kohala biddy basketball, volleyball registration.
There will be Biddy Basketball (ages 5-8) registration held at Hisaoka Gym in Kohala on Aug. 10 and Aug. 12 from 4-5 p.m. Registration is free and includes uniform.
Practices will be held in the second half of August and games will be in September-October.

Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament opening ceremony
The Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament invites the public to attend its Opening Ceremony at the Kailua Pier Aug. 9 starting at 5 p.m.
This official recognition of teams from around the world marks the start of the 56th annual tournament. Nine participating countries will be acknowledged as each national anthem is played and flag raised. Families and community members are invited to attend as the Kailua Pier comes to life with music and celebration.
The family-friendly event will host food booths and trucks, craft vendors and free musical entertainment.
The event is free and open to the public. Bleacher seats are first come, so don’t delay.

Kona Hongwanji Golf Tournament
The Kona Hongwanji golf tournament will be Aug. 9 at Big Island Country Club. Tee off is as 8 a.m. with registration starting at 6:45 a.m.
Format will be a two-person scramble with maximum team handicap of 48. Entry fee is $120 per person (green fee and cart, lunch and donation). Two mulligan included in entry fee. Mauna Loa Training Time Trial
The Hawaii Cycling Club’s 17-mile Mauna Loa Training Time Trial and Saturday Ride are scheduled for Aug. 15 at 8 a.m. on the Mauna Loa Observatory Road.
Participants can choose between the training time trial and the non-timed Saturday Club ride, which will start immediately after the timed event.
Casual bicyclists take your time and enjoy Mauna Loa Observatory Road’s spectacular views and very light traffic.
HCC’s famous Talk Story food and beverage station will be at the finish line. Registration will be from 7:30 -7:45 a.m. at Kipuka Pu’u Huluhulu (Native Tree Sanctuary parking lot off of Saddle Rd.)
Either an annual membership or a one day membership is required to participate. The annual membership fee is $20. The one day fee is $10.

A volunteer coach since 1996, Denise talks about the joy of representing Hawaii at the largest sports-humanitarian event in the world this year. She is coaching several athletes from Hawaii including Isaiah Wong from her Kona Power lifting team. Denise shares stories about Special Olympics, started in 1968 by President Kennedy’s sister, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities including the Kennedy’s sister, Rose Marie.The West Hawaii Special Olympics is always growing so welcomes coaches and volunteers.
