A northeast swell is forecast to bring advisory-level surf to east-facing shores of the Big Island through 6 p.m. Wednesday, National Weather Service forecasters say.
Wave heights of 5 to 8 feet are expected along east-facing shores of the island’s northern and eastern coasts, forecasters said. The surf is forecast to build Tuesday night and remain elevated throughout Wednesday.
The service categorized the surf’s impact as “moderate,” cautioning of strong breaking waves, shore break and strong longshore and rip currents that can make swimming dangerous.
Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution. Boaters should expect recreational surfers and body boarders utilizing harbor channels to access surfing areas, forecasters added.
