KEA‘AU — Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i boys basketball won its third consecutive matchup after routing Honoka‘a 63-40 on Wednesday night at home.
The Warriors’ defense played a big part in their victory, allowing less than 10 points in two of the four quarters. Allowing 47.5 points per game in Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) play, it was the fourth time this season that KSH has allowed 40 points or less.
Kawohi Huihui, who leads the Warriors in overall scoring at 18.3 points per game, tied for a game-high 22 points. Teammate Kiai Yasso, who averages 16.3 points per game as the team’s No. 2 option, added 11 with three 3-pointers made. Six other Warriors scored — Kaikuakea Kahana-Rowe (nine), Justin Ondo (six), Clay Ching (four), Mathias Kyota (four), Tyler Kaohu (four) and Kolten Tabuyo-Kahele (three). KSH made six 3s as a team.
Dragons swingman Kukia Tagabi, who averages 23.1 points a night, added 22 points. Teammate Davis Aiona finished with eight. It was Honoka‘a’s first loss since Nov. 23 after winning five straight. The Dragons average 61.9 points per game while allowing 53.5 in their 6-5 overall record (6-1 BIIF).
The Warriors moved to 9-3 overall and 4-1 in league play, averaging 65 points per game as a team. Their next challenge will be against east-side rival Hilo tonight in Kea‘au, with junior varsity tipping off first at 5:30 p.m.
The Dragons will take on Konawaena at 5:30 p.m. tonight inside Ellison Onizuka Gymnasium. Junior varsity will also play first prior to varsity.
Kona 64, Hilo 31
After dropping the last three games, Konawaena boys basketball got back on track with a 64-31 rout of Hilo on Wednesday inside Ellison Onizuka Gymnasium.
Wildcats’ swingman Maxon McCloskey finished with a game-high 15 points, while teammate Dylan Nonaka added 14. The green and white average 64.4 points per game in the BIIF while allowing just under 47.
On the Vikings’ side, Shaystan Iyo and Kalewa Lerman scored seven each.
Now at 8-9 overall and 5-2 in BIIF play, Kona will look to keep winning with its next matchup against Honoka‘a tonight at home. Hilo (3-6 overall, 2-2 BIIF) next faces KSH tonight in Kea‘au.

Ka‘u 59, Waiakea 53
Ka‘u boys basketball beat Waiakea in close fashion Wednesday in Pahala, winning 59-53. The Trojans moved to 3-8 overall and 2-6 in BIIF play. The Warriors fell to 5-6 overall and 3-2 on the island.
Ka‘u’s Excel Bonoan scored a game-high 23 points, while running mate Daeten Castillo added 16. The Trojans average 55.2 points per game this season.
Waiakea’s Josiah Amuimuia scored a team-high 13 points, while teammates Maika Kauhi and Xayden Franco scored 11 apiece.
Ka‘u will play Pahoa at 6 p.m. tonight on the road, while Waiakea will host Parker at 6 p.m. tonight in Hilo.
Pahoa 74, Parker 26
Pahoa boys basketball had a successful business trip to the northern part of the isle Wednesday, routing Parker 74-26 in Waimea. The win marked the third straight game in which the Daggers scored over 70 points. It was Pahoa’s third straight win.
The paper was unable to obtain the top scorers from this game.
The Daggers (3-4), who average 60.6 points per game while allowing 47.6, will next take on the visiting Ka‘u Trojans at 6 p.m. tonight in Pahoa town.
The Bulls remain winless at 0-8 overall. They’ll next travel to Hilo to play Waiakea at 5 p.m. Saturday.
