BIIF soccer: Hilo wins on road; Warriors sweep Dragons
KEA‘AU — In a defensive-minded battle between two east-side opponents, Hilo girls basketball escaped Keaau 28-24 on Wednesday in the Lady Cougars’ gymnasium.
Trailing 10-3 at the half, Kea‘au found life in the second half, scoring 21 points to the Lady Vikings’ 18. However, the late offensive surge wasn’t able to make up for the near-scoreless first half.
Hilo (3-7 overall, 2-2 BIIF) was led by Janessa Thorton with nine points and Carly Akaka with seven. Lady Cougar Lenzy Adlawan, who leads her group in scoring at nearly 10 points per game, dropped a game-high 10 points — the only player of the evening to reach double figures in scoring.
The Lady Vikings will next host Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i on Monday night in Hilo. Kea‘au (1-5) will next play Parker at 6 p.m. Saturday at home.
Soccer: HPA 7, Konawaena 1
Hawaii Preparatory Academy girls soccer had a successful homestand against the visiting Konawaena Lady Wildcats on Wednesday afternoon in Waimea, routing the guests 7-1.
Madie Buczyna, Ka Makani’s leading scorer thus far in the early season, secured a hat trick to lead all players — one in the 15th minute, one in the 28th and the last in the 31st minute.
Teammates Cameron Goodwin (26th minute), Nohea Lansdale (42nd minute), Zaylee Moses (44th minute) and Tae Detwiler (62nd minute) made up the rest of HPA’s scorers.
Kona’s lone goal was scored by Jazmin Fillamore in the 80th minute.
Soaring to 3-1-0, Ka Makani will next take the pitch again at 3 p.m. today against KSH at home. The Lady Wildcats (1-5-0) will host Honoka‘a at 4 p.m. Saturday in Kealakekua.
Waiakea 3, Honoka‘a 1
Waiakea boys soccer had a successful trip to the Hamakua Coast on Wednesday afternoon, handling the Honoka‘a Dragons with a 3-1 final score.
Ito Doratt, the team’s second-leading scorer, posted two goals while teammate Keldon Yoshida had one of his own. The paper was unable to locate Honoka‘a’s long goal scorer.
Next up, the 2-2-1 Warriors will travel to the Gold Coast to face Kealakehe at 2 p.m. Saturday at Waverider Stadium.
The Dragons (0-2) will also head to the Kona proper to face Konawaena at 2 p.m. Saturday at Julian R. Yates Field.
The Waiakea girls team also beat Honoka‘a later that afternoon, blanking the hosts 7-0. The paper was unable to obtain goal scorers from this match.
The Warriors will next play Kealakehe at 4 p.m. Saturday in Kona town, while the Dragons will play Konawaena at 4 p.m. in Kealakekua.
