The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) winter sports season continued Wednesday with soccer and basketball games across the isle.
Basketball: Kealakehe 92, CLA 29
Kealakehe boys basketball started off its season on a high note with a 92-29 thrashing of the visiting Christian Liberty Academy Canefire. CLA dropped to 1-2.
Estavon Morales led the Waveriders with 16 points, followed by teammates Kamalu Pabre and Michael Miller with 12 each. Isaiah Cho and DeMarion Olloway scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, to round out the five double-digit scorers for Kealakehe.
The Waveriders will next take the floor against Kohala on Monday night at King Kamehameha Gymnasium in Kapa‘au. The Canefire will next face St. Joseph’s in Kea‘au on Tuesday.
Kona 68, Parker 29
Konawaena boys basketball won its second straight Wednesday night inside Waimea District Gymnasium against Parker. The Wildcats beat the Bulls 68-29.
Kona (2-1) set the tone early, outscoring Parker (0-3) 24-4. From there, the green and white never looked back, and secured the rout.
The paper was unable to locate the game’s top scorers by deadline.
The Wildcats will next face Ka‘u on December 13 inside Ellison Onizuka Gymnasium. The Bulls will take on Honoka‘a on Dec. 14 inside the Dragons’ gymnasium.
Soccer: HPA 3, Kea‘au 0
Hawaii Preparatory Academy boys soccer earned win No. 2 of the early season, blanking Kea‘au 3-0 on the road. For the Cougars, Wednesday was their season opener.
Ka Makani’s Bodie Buczyna led the way for the winner, earning a three-goal hat trick. Buzyna leads HPA with four goals on the season.
Now starting the season at 2-0, Ka Makani will look to extend its strong start in its next match against KSH at 2 p.m. Saturday in Kea‘au. With the Warriors being last year’s DII state runner-ups, the match will serve as a big test to see where HPA stands in the early portion of the schedule.
Kea‘au will visit Kealakehe for a 3 p.m. Saturday match at Waverider Stadium.
Hilo 5, Honoka‘a 0
Hilo girls soccer earned win No. 1 of the 2024-25 regular season with a 5-0 rout of the Dragons in Honoka‘a town.
The Vikings ran a balanced offense, as Aneala Sibayan, Apu Saguid, Teiya Santiago, Tita Rupano-Parada-Kaawaloa and Lyla Miguel all scored. Teammates Akahai Kepoo-DeConte, Lilinoe Tonelli and Lindsey Hiraki dished out one assist each.
Now at 1-0-1 on the season, Hilo will face Konawaena on Tuesday at home. The Dragons are still in search of their first win at 0-2-0, and will next host Waiakea on Dec. 18 at home.
