The Hawaii Marlin Tournament Series heads into Leg 3 this weekend with the 28th annual Firecracker Open Big Game Tournament. The Firecracker Open qualifies marlin and ahi.
Last year, 81 years young angler Jim Wood won the Firecracker with a 662-pound blue. This was his first win after 20 years of fishing tournaments in Kona. Wood returns this weekend to defend his championship.
Last weekend the Kona Kick Off was a “four flags” tournament that qualified marlin, ahi, ono and mahi. Paulette Pama took the Biggest Marlin with a 491 pound blue from Capt. Steven Fassbender’s “Teresa”.
Gordon Finlay took top honors with the largest ahi from Capt. David Crawford’s “Kona Blue”. Largest ono was a 43.5 pounder landed by Brian Kimbal on Capt. Howard Whitcomb’s “Intrepid”.
Organizers of the Hawaii Marlin Tournament Series expect about 60 teams this weekend at the Firecracker Open and more than $300,000 in prizes and purse. All tournaments in the Hawaii Marlin Tournament Series are open to the public and anyone can enter, regardless of their fishing experience.
