Pilipaa coach Chris Leonard continued to see signs of improvement. Along the way, he also saw a victory.
The Hilo 14-and-under girls team broke through at the USA Volleyball junior national championships on Wednesday, winning in three sets on the second day of pool play.
The 25-15, 21-25, 15-9 victory came against a team from Washington that was coached by former University of Hawaii standout Chris Kosty.
Earlier in the day, Pilipaa 14s lost in straight sets despite a strong effort against a team from Ohio.
“We played well, but everything we hit, they dug,” Leonard said.
“Keani Akui played well, and we had good balance.”
At 1-4 in tournament, Pilipaa will continue in flight play.
