Early Music Hawaii presents the New York- and France-based duo Asteria, winners of the first Unicorn Early Music America Competition for Medieval/Renaissance performance, at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Queen Emma Community Center at Christ Church Episcopal in Kealakekua. Sylvia Rhyne, soprano, and Eric Redlinger, tenor and lute, bring to life the love songs of medieval Burgundy. The duo brings out the passion and emotional impact of late medieval vocal and instrumental music with timeless love songs of wide appeal, transporting their listeners back to the age of chivalry.
The 15th century ducal court of Burgundy was the center of European art and culture. The ecstasy of love and bitterness of unrequited passion are expressed in the beautiful songs of the greatest composers, who follow the long troubadour tradition of chivalry and Arthurian romance.
Asteria has been heralded as “meltingly beautiful” by The New York Times and as “captivating and intimate” by Goldberg Magazine.
