Zonta club seeks grant recipients
The Zonta Club of Hilo is accepting microgrant applications to provide funding for women-owned small businesses on Hawaii Island. Women entrepreneurs who are seeking financial support are encouraged to apply.
The Pay It Forward program goal is to help women in our community start up or expand a business through a microgrant intended to give a helping hand. The grant will be up to $2,000. Awardees are encouraged to “Pay It Forward” when they are financially able.
“Helping women to succeed and improve our communities advances the mission of Zonta. Pay It Forward is one of the many programs our club offers to empower women and girls through service and advocacy,” said Zonta Club of Hilo President Julie Tulang.
The Pay It Forward program of the local chapter of Zonta was launched in 2014 with an initial generous donation from Nancy Cabral, a Zonta member and owner of Day-Lum Rentals &Management, Inc. Cabral’s desire was to encourage other women to achieve financial independence and business success. Since its inception, many other generous donors have contributed to these microgrants for women entrepreneurs.

Puako beach cleanup day July 8
Keep Puako Beautiful, South Kohala Reef Alliance, Hawaii Preparatory Academy &Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail NPS July 8 Summer Cleanup and Community Education for the Kohala Coast and beyond. Land and shoreline access for water cleanup.
Starts at 8:30 am and ends at noon at Kawaihae Small Boat Harbor South.
7 a.m. Arrive to set up. Educators can have a quick cleanup if desired prior to visitor arrival 8 AM Welcome, Sign in waivers, cleanup safety, gear up and pick a site to clean for land and water.
8:30 a.m. Begin cleanup
10:30 to 11 a.m. Cleanup Ends: Table with tent station – Volunteers return to weigh in station: tally &total trash and separate recyclables. Bag Please volunteer to take a bag to the transfer station on your way home . We like progressive photos of volunteers and trash pile, cleanup photos, group photos for land and water. We have an active recycling and up-cycling fishing line and cigarette litter program. Hi5 beverage containers are recycled, marine debris plastics and glass is saved for use in commercial products or as our marine debris art supplies.
10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Participants receive a ticket to Spin the Education Wheel for prizes after trash is logged in. Marine debris guessing game.
8:30 to Noon – Education, exhibits, table shares and marine debris art table activity.
8:30 to 12 Noon – Hydration, Snack &Water table w/ tent station available, pot luck welcome
Bring snacks, pot luck or drinks to share at the Hydration and snack table.
Event table shares: Bring table, tents, education materials, exhibits, chairs and personal comfort and safety items.
Kailua-Kona student named to dean’s list at George Fox University
Nahe Beatty of Kailua Kona was among those who earned dean’s list recognition at George Fox University for the spring 2023 semester. Traditional undergraduate students must earn a 3.5 grade point average or above on 12 or more hours of graded work to earn a spot on the dean’s list. Beatty is a senior majoring in interior design.
