The Kona Brain Injury Support Group will be meeting on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at 4 pm HST. The speaker is Dr. Amy Kemp PhD, CCC-SLP, Poly trauma Fellow, Department of Veterans Affairs.
She will present: Learning in Older Adults with Traumatic Brain Injury: A Research Study.Dr. Kemp will share information on an ongoing online study that is considering how older adults learn and use health education materials, such as fall prevention education. This study is specifically looking for older adults with a history of concussion or traumatic brain injury. We will discuss some current findings as well as provide information how to participate if interested. You will be compensated up to $100 for your participation in the study. Hawaii County Fire Dispatch to Temporarily merge with Police
Hawa’i Fire Department announces that the Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) 911 system will be combined with the Police Dispatch system effective immediately. The critical change in the County’s emergency services dispatch system comes as Fire officials grapple with ongoing staffing challenges. The temporary move is designed to ensure the most effective and efficient service possible for Hawai’i County Residents. In a written statement to residents, Hawai’i Fire Chief Kazuo Todd said, “We understand that you may have concerns regarding this change, but rest assured that we are taking this matter very seriously. We are actively working on long-term solutions to address staffing challenges and are committed to returning to separate dispatch systems as soon as it becomes feasible.” The temporary merger could minimally disrupt regular services, though significant interruptions are not expected. Fire officials will continue to monitor the temporary merger and will make adjustments as necessary to ensure the health and safety of the public. The Department thanks the community for their understanding and reiterates that the hardworking men and women of the Department remain committed to the communities health and wellbeing. Billfish Tournament returns to Kona
Returning to Kona in 2023, the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament (HIBT) is making plans for two summer tournaments. The 61st HIBT is set for August 5 through 13, 2023 with five days of fishing set for Monday August 7 through Friday, August 11. Teams and anglers from around the world are expected to return to Kona to experience the tradition of marlin fishing aboard some of Kona’s top charter boats, all with the chance of winning the HIBT.
The Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament (HIBT) is searching for its 2023 Miss Billfish. Each year, Miss Billfish plays a valuable role in the tournament including taking photos with teams and their catches and appearing at evening functions throughout tournament week. Applicants must be available to HIBT from Friday, August 4 through Sunday, August 14 ,2023.
