In the Waiakea Golf feature published in the Sunday edition, it was stated that Waiakea boys golf has won nine state titles.
The Warriors have won 11 state titles.
BIIF Tennis playoffs on tap
The BIIF Tennis individual playoffs will begin this week, and team championships will start next week.
Individuals will be played Wednesday through Saturday at Mauna Kea. More details will be released soon.
Team semifinals will begin April 26th. For the boys — No.1 seed Waiakea will host No.4 Hilo at 2 p.m., and No.2 HPA will host No.3 Kealakehe at 3 p.m.
For girls semifinals — No.1 Waiakea will host No.4 Kealakehe at 2 p.m. and No.2 HPA will host No.3 Hilo at 3 p.m.
The Championship will be held April 29th at 10 a.m. at the high seed. Last year, Waiakea won both the boys and girls team championships.
Ka Makani ends season
with blowout win
Though Hawai‘i Prep’s varsity baseball team fell short of qualifying for the BIIF Division II playoffs, it ended its season on a high note — notching a 18-8 senior game victory over Kealakehe High School on Saturday afternoon.
Ka Makani shut the Waveriders out in the first two innings while plating four runs. Kealakehe scored three runs in the top third, but HPA responded with five more runs in the bottom frame to stay out of striking distance at 9-3.
Kealakehe won its first inning in the fourth, scoring four runs while holding Ka Makani to one — shrinking its deficit to 10-7.
However, HPA notched a big fifth inning — shutting out the Waveriders in the top and plating five runs during its turn in the box. The frame was highlighted by a right-field line drive triple by Hudson Mangold for two RBI.
Kealakehe eked out one more run in the top sixth, but it was not enough. Ka Makani put up two more runs in the bottom of the inning, then Nainoa Hummel doubled to bat in a walk-off run.
Ed Lustik went three-for-three to score three runs and bat in two, recording HPA’s best batting average of the outing. Hummel went three-for-four with a walk, scoring three runs and batting in one.
Mangold went two-for-four with a walk to score three runs and lead Ka Makani in RBI with four. Mangold also pitched the last two innings of the game and allowed one earned run on a hit and two walks while striking out five.
Despite the loss, Kealakehe’s Marheo Kelen had a good day in the box — batting two-for-three to score two runs and bat in three.
HPA’s season is over, but the Waveriders will get a chance to keep playing at BIIF DI semifinals this week. Today at 3 p.m., Kealakehe (seeded No. 3) will host No. 2 seed Waiakea for Game Two of the semifinals.
