Kona man charged with kidnapping, terroristic threatening in school incident
A 29-year-old Kailua-Kona man is facing a handful of charges following an incident Wednesday at Honaunau Elementary School.
Kona patrol officers responded to the reported incident at the school and determined that Christopher Estoy had entered the school campus and followed a student into a student restroom. Estoy, who was in possession of a weapon, closed the restroom door, restricting the juvenile from exiting the restroom. Shortly after, an adult who was in the immediate area heard a commotion and was able to open the restroom door at which time the juvenile was able to escape.
Estoy was arrested on suspicion of unlawful imprisonment but later charged Friday with kidnapping, custodial interference, first-degree terroristic threatening, and second-degree unlawful imprisonment in the second degree. In addition, Estoy was charged for unrelated offenses related to burglary and revocation of supervised release.
Estoy made his initial appearance Monday in Kona District Court before Judge Kimberly Taniyama, who maintained bail at $10,000 in the case stemming from Wednesday. A preliminary hearing is scheduled Tuesday.
