Roger and Ann Souther believe the most effective way of using human creativity is through organized cooperation, and this year this dynamic duo decided to devote their time and money to creating Big Island Sessions, a full-service rehearsal and recording facility located in Kona’s Old Industrial Area.
The Southers are now living their dream to provide a comfortable, well-equipped environment where artists and performers from novice to professional can develop and hone their skills.
“When Anna and I first met in 2007, we were getting to know each other, and I described this place that was kind of part music studio and part art gallery — a place for people to teach their art, like an artist co-op,” said Roger. “When I was describing this place, she burst into tears and said, ‘Oh my God, that’s my dream too.’ That was one of the first things that connected us.”
Last year, Anna was diagnosed with breast cancer. After five surgeries, a full mastectomy, and a plethora of treatments, she deemed cancer free and the two decided there was no better time to chase their dream and make it come true.
“Anna has always encouraged me to pursue my dreams,” said Roger who is the lead singer for the local band, Charlie Don’t Surf. “We weren’t quite ready to pull the trigger yet on this idea, but then all of a sudden she came down with cancer and it was a huge blow. We were so strung out and tired from the treatments and the emotional part of everything, then we found out that we had a significant tax return, so we were going to use to go on a big vacation. As we were sitting on this tax return money and trying to figure out how we were going to spend it on our vacation, this place came available and we thought this could totally be it. We figured that you always regret the things you never try but you never regret failing or making mistakes at the things you do try. So we just did it. She’s been the happiest I’ve ever seen her. We put a lot of work into it and she is just having a blast.”
Anna remembers the moment she realized that it was time to start pursuing their dream, as well.
“It never felt like the right time until this year when I was diagnosed with cancer and I realized that it was time to get on this and not wait any longer,” she said. “It’s time to not live in fear — we got a tax return and decided to give it a try. It all just kind of came together. It’s really been great with lots of volunteers. It’s been a community effort. We got such a good response that we knew there was a need. I’ve never seen my husband so happy. It’s been a great adventure and a great beginning.”
Big Island Sessions is open for community members who wish to practice with their band or make a recording. It’s also available for dance groups, yoga classes, poetry readings, and open mic nights. The facilities will provide the community with whatever is needed, whether it’s a place to practice, or a fully equipped rehearsal and recording studio.
“It’s open to anything artistic,” said Anna. “We’re really excited to see what it is going to develop into. The music part is Roger’s vision, the art piece is my vision. I’d like to see people painting and sharing. I hope to see art openings and just being a part of the community.”
Part of the inspiration came from kids wanting to perform with Roger’s band.
“When our kids were in high school, we always had these kids who wanted to sit in and play with us old farts, and it became this family of Kona artists who were starving to perform and practice their craft. There are so many talented people in Hawaii,” said Roger.
The Southers say they are appreciative of all the community support they’ve received in getting their dream up and running, and are grateful for every moment they have together.
“I’m cancer-free and I’m healthy,” said Anna. “Something about cancer: You can go either way, you can either get really depressed about what’s going on, or it’s going to put a new fire under you. For me, it definitely lit a fire. I’ve been super happy. I’ve amazed myself at how good life is and how much I appreciate it. You remember that even when your kid is talking smack to you. It’s okay, because you’re lucky to be here.”
