HPA girls, Waiakea boys lead the way in Waimea
WAIMEA – The Hawaii Prep girls looked right at home on Saturday.
WAIMEA – The Hawaii Prep girls looked right at home on Saturday.
They were, of course, competing at their home track on the HPA campus, but their comfort level was obvious as Ka Makani girls racked up a total of 15 top-3 finishes at this year’s fourth BIIF track &field meet of the season, besting Waiakea’s girls – who had 10 – followed by Konawaena and Hilo with six apiece.
Leading the way on the track were Kaiulani Bento, whose wining time of 16.61 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles is currently the second-fastest time in the state, and Jordan Perry, who broke into the state’s top 10 in the 400 meters with a finish of 1:01.58. Perry was also part of HPA’s victorious 4×400 relay team including Bella Dadzie, Siddney Shumate and Caroline Betlach; the quartet’s time of 4:18.44 is the second-fastest in Hawaii this year.
In the field, Ka Makani’s Elaina Head claimed wins in both the high jump (4’8”, barely fending off fellow freshman Talia Threlkeld, who also cleared 4’8”) and triple jump (32’3.5”), while Ava Huddleston notched her second win of the year in pole vault, clearing 8’0”.
On the boys’ side, Waiakea outpaced the field with 12 top-3 finishes, four more than Kealakehe and five more than Kamehameha, Hawaii Prep and Konwaena, who each tallied seven.
The Warriors’ Kederang Ueda continued his dominance in distance events, taking both the 1,500 (4:25.69) and 3,000 (9:52.47) by wide margins. Ueda was one of two Waiakea athletes to win two events; Alex Tuson took the 110-meter hurdles (19.17) and 300-meter hurdles (44.21). The Warriors also scored first-place finishes from Kyoshi Todd in the 800 (2:10.88), Shauntae Taifmai in shot put (42’4”) and Donte Hall-Rowa in triple jump (36’8”). Taifmai’s toss marked the ninth-longest throw in the state.
Go for gold
Athletes winning multiple individual events included Kamehameha’s Kahiau Poe (100, long jump), Konawaena’s Caiya Hanks (100, 200) and Hilo’s Hulali Halpern (800, 1,500).
Just short
While Waiakea’s Taysia Rocha had just one first-place finish (long jump) on the day, she had perhaps the most well-rounded meet of any athlete, recording four second-place finishes (100, 200, 400, triple jump). Other athletes claiming multiple runner-up or better finishes were Bento (300-meter hurdles, long jump), Kealakehe’s Cameron Cornforth (800, 1,500) and Konawaena’s Isaac Clement (300-meter hurdles, triple jump).
Big Island athletes will be back in action Saturday, when they head to Keaau for the fifth BIIF meet of the season.
