HONOLULU — The Hawaii Department of Transportation says a new policy at Honolulu Airport has dramatically cut down citations for trespassing.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports just two citations have been issued since nightly closures of overseas lobbies and baggage claim areas began March 13.
Closures were put in place to stop homeless people from camping at the airport. The overseas lobbies and baggage claim areas now close between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
DOT spokesman Tim Sakahara says the airport has gone from 50 to 60 non-traveling loiterers to almost zero last week.
People holding airline tickets can use a secure holding room overnight. The number of travelers using the holding area has ranged from one to three dozen.
Safety complaints from overnight workers and travelers led to the policy.
