A standing room only crowd of nearly 1,000 people filled the new St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church on Alii Drive for the dedication ceremony with The Most Reverend Larry Silva, Bishop of Honolulu presiding. The dedication ceremony and mass was followed by a reception at Hale Halawai. Groundbreaking for the church was held Sept. 28, 2012, after the old structure and adjacent wooden administration building were demolished following structural damage from the Oct. 15, 2006, earthquake. A temporary church was set up under a tent in the Honokohau Business Park while the new 9,500-square-foot $11 million church was constructed.
