Associate Justice Paula A. Nakayama administered the oath of office remotely on Sept. 11 to protect the health and safety of the participants, according to the Judiciary.
“I am so grateful to be part of the amazing institution that is the Hawaii Judiciary, and thank the Judicial Selection Commission for giving me the opportunity to continue to serve,” Recktenwald said.
Recktenwald was sworn in as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on Sept. 14, 2010. He joined the Supreme Court as an Associate Justice on May 11, 2009, and previously served as Chief Judge of the Intermediate Court of Appeals beginning in April 2007.
Prior to his appointment to the Intermediate Court of Appeals, Recktenwald served as the director of the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Hawaii, and as an attorney in private practice.
He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and his law degree from the University of Chicago.
