A Kona grand jury Wednesday indicted a 29-year-old woman for attempted murder and other charges stemming from a vehicle-versus-moped collision last month in Kailua-Kona.
The panel via a five-count indictment charged Keola Kama with two counts attempted second-degree murder, first-degree criminal property damage, driving without a license and failure to have no-fault motor vehicle insurance in connection with the June 13 incident on Kuakini Highway fronting Old Kona Airport Park.
Kama is accused of using her sedan to ram a moped carrying a 30-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, critically injuring the two victims, according to police, who noted the man and woman were later flown to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu for treatment.
Kama reportedly exited her vehicle and chased the moped’s passenger before fleeing the scene. Officers located Kama a short time later and took her into custody, charging her with six offenses.
During Kama’s first court appearance, Kona District Court Judge Margaret Masunaga granted the woman’s request for supervised release pending a preliminary hearing or indictment to transfer the case to Circuit Court for trial.
The case is now assigned to Kona Circuit Court Judge Robert D.S. Kim. An arraignment and plea hearing had yet to be set as of press-time Wednesday.
