A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. Monday for the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea summits, the National Weather Service reports.
Up to 1 inch of new snow is expected to fall above 12,500 feet in elevation, forecasters said. The temperature will be in the lower 20s and visibility could be reduced to less than one-half mile at times.
A wind warning is also in effect through 6 p.m. Monday, according to the service. Southwest winds around 50 to 70 mph with gusts topping 105 are forecast.
Freezing fog and icing also will be possible, making driving difficult and dangerous in the area. Visibility could be reduced to less than one-half mile, forecasters said.
These conditions may pose hazards for anyone on or near the Big Island summits, forecasters said.
The Mauna Kea access road was closed as of 7 a.m. Monday because of snow, ice and high winds, according to the Mauna Kea Weather Center. It was not expected to reopen on Monday.
