A handful of West Hawaii beaches are closed Tuesday due to high surf.
A high surf advisory for west-facing shores of Hawaii Island from Ka‘u to North Kohala remains in effect through Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. Wave heights of 6-10 feet are forecast.
Due to the surf, Mahukona Beach Park, Kaunaoa Beach at Mauna Kea Beach Resort, Kua Bay, Laaloa Beach Park and Kahaluu Beach Park are closed, according to Hawaii County Civil Defense.
A high surf advisory means surf will be higher than normal, shore break, and dangerous currents could cause injury or death. Oceangoers should also heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution and expect strong breaking waves, shore break, and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.
