Ocean awareness training planned
Marine conservation organizations are offering ocean awareness training at West Hawaii Civic Center. This course will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Dec. 11 and 15 and will provide multi-disciplinary knowledge of Hawaii’s unique marine environment.

Hilo Makery holds open house
An open house at the Hilo Makery will include ornament making refreshments and live music from 5 to 9 Friday during Red and White Night first art walk. The Makery is a collection of tools, machines, materials and know-how that empowers individuals to turn ideas into tangible products.

Culinary event to fund scholarships
Christmas at Kamakahonu Bay-Dining with the Chefs, a fundraiser for Kona Kohala Chefs Association culinary scholarships, will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the luau grounds of King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
The event includes 20 chef tasting stations, handcrafted beer, wine, live music, dancing and a silent and live auction.
The cost is $85, or reserved tables of 10 are $1,000. Tickets are available at konakohalachefs.org at Kailua Candy Company, Clark Realty in Kona, Westside Wines, Kona Wine Market and Bentley’s in Waimea or by calling 329-2522.
Waimea midweek market donates to Mama’s House
The Waimea Midweek Farmers Market celebrated its fourth anniversary by giving back to community. Their “Hats Off to You!” program donated $1 in food vouchers for every hat worn to the Wednesday market or posted on their social media networks. On Nov. 19, board member Cindy Beckey presented $660 in vouchers to Beth Mehau, executive director of Mama’s House/The Pantry, to distribute to families in need.
