Diaper drive Sept. 28
Hawaii Diaper Bank, the state’s first organization committed to collecting and distributing diapers to keep our keiki clean, dry and healthy, is hosting its first “Wipe Out Diaper Need” event in celebration of National Diaper Need Awareness Week.
Last year the organization received a county proclamation and this year it received another county proclamation as well as a special message from Gov. David Ige and Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard.
The family friendly drive will be held from 4-8 p.m. Sept. 28 at Umeke’s Fish Market Bar and Grill. Tickets will include food, drinks, keiki activities and live entertainment as well as a silent auction and local organizations and businesses over the island are holding diaper drives on the group’s behalf.
All diapers and wipes collected will be showcased at the event.

Tchaikovsky concert opens KPO season
The Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra opens its 2019-20 MasterWorks Season at 2 p.m. Oct. 6 with a program entitled “Yee &Tchaikovsky” at Kahilu Theatre.
The performance opens the Orchestra’s 15th season and features award-winning pianist and guest soloist Dr. Thomas Yee of Honolulu, who will be performing one of the most iconic piano concertos of all time — Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto. Led by Artistic Director and Conductor Brian Dollinger, the Kamuela Philharmonic and its many talented musicians will also be featured in Sibelius’s magnificent Symphony No. 2 — an astounding aural journey with one of the most majestic and soaring finales ever written.
Yee is Professor of Music and Associate Music Department Chair at the University of Hawaii Manoa and has performed as guest soloist with orchestras throughout North America, and all over the globe. He has won first prizes in over 20 national and international competitions and is a genuinely enthralling performer.

Waimea Fall
Festival Oct. 12
Mark your calendars to welcome the fall season with a full day of family fun at the third annual Waimea Fall Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 12 at Waimea District Park, 67-1315 Ala Ohia Road. Admission is free.
This year, the fun-filled family festival, hosted by Waimea Athletics, will feature a pumpkin patch, keiki games and activities, entertainment, a craft sale, community information booths and exhibits, and lots of great food and live entertainment.
Keiki can enjoy a full day of fun with face painting, train rides, a climbing wall, inflatable bounce houses and water slides, outdoor field games, horseback rides, and a petting zoo. There will be a wristband game zone featuring carnival games such as bean bag toss, milk bottle knockdown, fishing wall, and duckpond. Wristbands also will be available for the inflatables and waterslides. Be sure to bring lots of sunscreen, a swimsuit, towel, and beach chairs.
The U.S. Army at Pohakuloa Training Area will have a series of exhibits ranging from their surprise aircraft display to the always popular football toss and dog tag making station by recruiters.
Last year’s festival attracted more than 6,000 people and organizers are planning for an even larger event this year.
Proceeds from the Waimea Fall Festival benefit participating non-profit organizations and local businesses, including sport equipment sponsorships provided by Waimea Athletics for community youth programs and public facilities.

‘The Rocky Horror Show’ cast set
Break out your fishnets, corsets, and feather boas! The Aloha Theatre is bringing “The Rocky Horror Show” to the stage to do the Time Warp again! The campy, B-movie-inspired, rock-and-roll cult musical sensation will take that jump to the left for a limited run on Oct. 25, 26, 30 and 31.
Newcomer Maxwell Crispo will be featured as the sweet transvestite from outer space, mad scientist Dr. Frank N Furter. He will be joined by fellow aliens, Stephen Alves as Riff Raff, and Justine Smith as Magenta. Raisa Klyne and Joel Carr will play Janet Weiss and Brad Majors, whose flat tire leads them to the dark castle and an outrageous night of mayhem. Jaquelynn Collier will sing and dance her way across the stage as both Columbia and The Usherette. Barry Levine, who has appeared as the titular character in several productions, will portray a new role as the Criminologist, Victor Lugo will reprise his role as Dr. Everett Scott, and Jay Barker will assume the position as Dr. Frank N Furter’s tanned and toned creation, Rocky Horror. The Phantoms/Transylvanian ensemble are: dance captain Rachel Carr, Chamika Fujioka, Sarah Friedman, Jennifer Ancheta, and Dove de Moss.
The production is directed by Miguel Montez. Amanda Trusty is choreographer and movement coach. Sharon “Boom-Boom” Cannon is the show’s musical director and band leader, and Binti Bailey is vocal director. The rest of the volunteer creative team and crew include: Jackie “JJ” Baldwin, Assistant Director; Stefani Pelletier, Producer and Stage Manager; Jeff Rowand, Sound Designer; Linda Rowand, Costume Designer; William McGregor, Set Designer; Gabriella Fritz, Builder and Prop Designer; Cambrey White and Kat Sullivan, Makeup; and Dove de Moss, Rehearsal Pianist. Audiences are encouraged to join in the tradition of participation, which includes interacting with the dialogue of the show. Monthly art classes start at Anna Ranch
Artist and art event coordinator Kathy Sprinkle has created a community project with three purposes: Bring local artists together to sell their art, offer art classes/experiences to the community and support the restoration of the historical Anna Ranch with a percentage of the profits.
The event kicks off this month at 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 29; 1-6 p.m. Sept. 30 and 1-6 p.m. Oct. 1 at Anna Ranch Heritage Center, 65-1480, Kawaihae Road in Waimea.
“I think of the monthly shows as parties to share with the community. Loosely based on Salons I’ve read about, we share art and experiences,” Sprinkle said about the new events. “This month we have a chocolate tasting and next month we are celebrating the white cows of Anna Ranch. The artists showcase their art (10% goes directly to support Anna Ranch restoration projects), we offer classes — a basket making class, a keiki craft and an oil painting class this month. We also have events for the whole community. The Mimosa Mingle — breakfast treats to kick off your Sunday morning and a closing party with pupus and a $100 raffle which the winner can spend at the fair like cash!”
