KAILUA-KONA — Old Kona Airport Park will be closed Tuesday morning to treat the Hawaii County recreation area for fire ants.
The closure is slated from 4-10 a.m., Department of Parks and Recreation Deputy Director Maurice Messina said. It’s needed so that the department’s vector team can treat the park for the ants.
“We have normal preventative maintenance for fire ants,” he said, noting that the department treats facilities islandwide for fire ants, termites and other pests. “We do this at all of our places. We close them because we need the stuff to dry up before we can open it back up and allow people to use it again.”
Signs were posted earlier this week along the exits and entrances to the park on Kuakini Highway to inform parkgoers of the six-hour closure.
