KAILUA-KONA — Authorities have identified a man who succumbed to injuries after being fatally struck by a vehicle outside the Mountain View Post Office.
Jerry Decker, 75, of Mountain View, was struck following a three-car collision Tuesday afternoon. The crash occurred at approximately 12:27 p.m. Hawaii Police say a 42-year-old Mountain View man was traveling north on Highway 11 in a 2003 Toyota pickup when he executed a left turn into the post office and was struck by a 2017 Ford Bus heading southbound operated by a 30-year-old Kona man.
The collision resulted in secondary impacts with a 2017 Subaru sedan, which was unoccupied within the parking lot of the post office and Decker, who had walked out of the post office.
The Toyota pickup driver and Decker were transported to Hilo Medical Center, with Decker later succumbing to his injuries, being pronounced dead at 2:49 p.m. The pickup driver was treated and released from the hospital Tuesday.
Police believe that speed and inattention to driving are contributing factors in the crash.
The Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a Negligent Homicide investigation and ask for anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact Officer Clifford Antonio at (808) 961-2329.
This is the third traffic fatality this year compared to five at this time last year.
