A 21-year-old Hilo man charged with attempted murder after striking a man in the neck with a machete on Saturday is slated to make his initial court appearance Monday afternoon.
Atkinson Nakashima was charged Sunday afternoon with attempted second-degree murder, according to the Hawaii Police Department. He is being held in lieu of $50,000 pending the initial court appearance.
Nakashima was arrested early Saturday after police responded to the 400 block of West Kawili Street in Hilo where they found a 21-year-old Hilo man with a neck injury. The man was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he remains in stable condition.
Investigation revealed that the victim had attempted to break up a fight between a 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy when Nakashima allegedly struck the victim in the neck with a machete, according to police. Nakashima was arrested at the scene and taken to the Hilo police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continued the investigation.
At 4 p.m. Sunday, detectives charged him with attempted second-degree murder.
