KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for suspected drunken driving between Aug. 6 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were younger than age 21.
South Hilo officers arrested seven motorists followed by Kona officers with six and Puna officers with five, according to data released by the Hawaii Police Department. Officers in South Kohala arrested three drivers.
So far this year, there have been 691 DUI arrests compared with 705 during the same period last year, according to police.
Through Monday, there have been 20 deaths on Hawaii Island public roads. At this point in 2017, 21 people had lost their lives in traffic crashes.
