HILO — Hawaii Island police have arrested three people who may have provided assistance to Justin Waiki while on the run after he shot and killed Officer Bronson Kaliloa on July 17 in Mountain View.
Alan Richmond, spokesman of the Hawaii Police Department, told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that two suspects turned themselves in to police and patrol officers located the other two Tuesday.
Police asked for the public’s help Monday locating 31-year-old Joey Ikaka Camacho, of no known address, 47-year-old Shaun Candaroma of Hilo, and 26-year-old Pomaikai Martin and 27-year-old Latoya Poepoe-Spalding, both of Kings Landing in Hilo.
Police said today three were arrested while 47-year-old Shaun Candaroma of Hilo has contacted detectives.
Waiki, 33, allegedly gunned down officer Bronson K. Kaliloa, 46, during a traffic stop Tuesday night at Highway 11 in Mountain View. Waiki fled on foot into nearby brush, setting off a three-day island-wide manhunt.
Acting on a tip on Waiki’s whereabouts, officers of the police department’s Special Response Team responded to South Point Road Friday afternoon.
Officers stopped and searched a sports utility vehicle carrying the three people. During the search, Waiki who was also in the SUV, fired gunshots and wounded one of the officers. Other officers immediately returned fire, resulting in Waiki’s death.
Police said a 35-year-old woman who was hiding with Waiki in the vehicle was transported to Hilo Medical Center after she sustained a gunshot wound to her leg and a broken femur.
