Overflows largest since Kilauea summit eruption began

HILO — Overflows of Kilauea’s summit lava lake covered a large portion of Halemaumau Crater on Thursday, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said.

The overflows, ongoing since Saturday, are the largest since the summit eruption started a decade ago.

So far, the events have covered about three-quarters of the floor of Halemaumau in a new layer of lava as the volcano remains in a high inflationary period.

The crater is about 133 acres in size.
