KAILUA-KONA — A man involved in a shark attack over the weekend remains in critical condition, authorities said Tuesday.
Hawaii Police Department Maj. Robert Wagner stated the 25-year-old victim is from Canada but his family owns a house in Kukio.
The victim suffered severe injuries during the encounter Saturday morning. At approximately 11 a.m., the Hawaii Fire Department received reports of a man bitten by a shark at Kukio Bay.
The 25-year-old man was paddleboarding with his father about 100-150 yards offshore at the time the encounter occurred, according to fire officials. Members of the outdoor pursuits staff from the Kukio Community Association responded to the attack by taking a four-person canoe out, recovering the man and bringing him back to shore.
Upon EMS arrival, fire officials reported bystanders were treating the patient with multiple tourniquets to his right-side extremities.
Wagner said the man had serious injuries that caused significant loss of blood. Without the assistance of those on the beach, Wagner added, the victim would have died.
The 25-year-old was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital then flown to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. Authorities reported that the man suffered multiple injuries to his hand and leg.
As of Tuesday evening, hospital officials, however, had not provided a condition update due to HIPPA regulations.
Kukio Bay is a public beach to which access is gained through the private and gated communities and resorts of Kukio Golf and Beach Club and Four Seasons Resort Hualalai.
Concierge at Kukio would not comment on whether the individual involved in the shark incident was a resident of the community.
General Manager Scott Nair is out of the office and has not returned emails for comment.
Let’s see if these elite residents of Kukio will demand the eradication of sharks, so they can swim in front of their multi-million dollar homes without being molested. All the locals know that the area of Kaupulehu is a prime shark breeding ground.
ohhhh waz da matta da boy got no money and is jealous of the rich mans bo? Save your comments for someone who cares, maybe your 1 friend…
He did sound a bit jealous? You live in the Kona area and you’re jealous of people that have more material things then you, your problems probably run really deep.
It is not being jealous of anyone. I just see the shoreline being closed off to all of the people, probably the same where you a–holes come from. It is a sad testament when the native people cannot have access to their livelihood—the ocean. And when we see people that live in these exclusive places and have no idea what the areas they live in are. And think they have free reign over all of these places, it is poetic that the very thing that the locals warn them about happens to them. And that is the sad part about all of it.
Don’t even bother. Haters gona hate. If konaboyforreal wants all sharks killed well that’s his issue. Awful person.
NotFoReal: Since when can YOU dictate whether or not a father and son should be able to go into the ocean and enjoy it, regardless of their knowledge of it’s alleged history? The gentlemen that rescued them work at Kukio to provide that service, and they did so seamlessly! You are certainly NOT showing any aloha. Go back to you cave.
Are there any updates on the young mans condition? First report said it was Kua bay? No?
