HONOLULU — A 24-year-old Waianae man who drove the wrong way on the H-2 freeway and crashed head-on into another motorist has been sentenced to four years of probation.
Jameson Yong pleaded no contest to negligent homicide in June and was sentenced Wednesday.
Prosecutors say he entered the freeway early Nov. 19, 2011, and smashed into a pickup drive by 40-year-old Lance Miyashiro, who died at the scene.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports Miyashiro’s family had asked Circuit Judge Glenn Kim to sentence Yong to five years in prison, the maximum for the felony.
Defense attorney Clarissa Malinao says Yong mistakenly entered the freeway because copper thieves had left the off-ramp without lighting.
Judge Kim also ordered Yong to pay Miyashiro’s mother $11,645 for her son’s funeral expenses.
