Nearly 1,000 keiki stormed the soccer field at Old Airport Park Saturday morning to gather their share of 35,000 plastic eggs at The Hub Church’s annual Egg Rush.
Pastor Tex Texeira said, the church continues the annual event, in its 27th year, for the joy it brings to the keiki.
“It’s so exciting to see them all come out,” said Texeira.
“I saw some of them as kids, now they are bringing their kids,” he said, pointing around the field.
The all-volunteer staff has perfected the logistics of the event over the years.
“The first year we used real eggs. It was a disaster,” Texeira joked.
To keep things fair and avoid a stampede, organizers separated the eager kids into age categories 0-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-11. Already seasoned egg hunters, 209 9- to 11-year-olds cleared the field of 8,000 eggs in 1 minute 11 seconds.
Once the field was cleared, keiki opened their egg stashes to reveal candy or a prize ticket.
After all the prizes were claimed, a raffle was held for items ranging from bikes to a Nintendo Switch.
All eggs, candy and prizes were provided by The Hub Church Kona.
