Monday is free at national parks
The National Park Service celebrates its 98th birthday on Monday, Founder’s Day, and entrance is free to all fee-charging national parks in America.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was also established 98 years ago, on Aug. 1, 1916. Called Hawaii National Park then, the park also comprised Haleakala National Park on Maui. In 1961, Haleakala became its own national park – and Hawaii Volcanoes has since grown to more than 333,000 acres, roughly the size of Oahu.
The park has more than 150 miles of hiking trails and 520 square miles that stretch from sea level to the 13,677-foot summit of Mauna Loa.
A schedule of free, ranger-led programs and guided hikes is posted by 9:30 a.m. daily outside Kilauea Visitor Center and the Jaggar Museum. Visitors can enjoy programs including Explore the Summit – a one-hour walk from the Kilauea Visitor Center to the edge of Kilauea caldera, and Life on the Edge, a 20-minute talk about the current eruption from Halemaumau Crater given daily at Jaggar Museum overlook.
Two other fee-charging parks in Hawaii – Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park and Haleakala National Park on Maui – will also waive entrance fees Monday.
Visitors can enjoy more free-entry days in 2014: Sept. 27 is National Public Lands Day, the largest single-day volunteer effort for public lands in the United States; and Nov. 11, is also free to honor Veterans Day.
Aurello completes basic training
Air Force Airman Arland K. Aurello graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Aurello earned distinction as an honor graduate.
He is the son of Roland Aurello and Angelina Agustin-Agustin of Paauilo. The airman is also a 2012 graduate of Honokaa High And Intermediate School.
Libraries closed for Labor Day
In observance of the Labor Day, all public libraries will be closed from Saturday, Aug. 30 through Monday, Sept. 1.
Kealakekua Public Library, normally closed on Thursdays, will be open on Thursday, Aug. 28.
