KAILUA-KONA — An Alaska woman accused of hitting her boyfriend with a rental car in December has been indicted by a Kona grand jury on an attempted murder charge.
The indictment against 30-year-old Crystal Young was filed in 3rd Circuit Court on Monday. She is facing charges of second-degree attempted murder and accident involving death or serious bodily injury.
If convicted, Young may be sentenced to a mandatory minimum period of imprisonment without the possibility of parole because she would be considered a repeat felony offender in accordance to Hawaii State statutes.
The indictment states Young was convicted in Alaska of second-degree theft, tampering with physical evidence and third-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance. All three offenses are class C felonies.
This week’s indictment charges stem from an incident that occurred on the runway area of Old Kona Airport Park on Dec. 15, 2017.
Young had been involved in a domestic dispute with her boyfriend, a 36-year-old man, also visiting from Alaska. Young was reportedly “driving reckless, doing doughnuts with the vehicle” while the man was outside of the car, Hawaii Police Department Maj. Robert Wagner said at the time of the incident.
While operating a black sedan, Young allegedly drove straight for the man and struck him, causing significant injuries to his body and head.
After striking the man with the vehicle, police say, Young drove to the north end of the park and fled on foot into the brush area where she was later located by authorities.
Young’s boyfriend was taken to Kona Community Hospital before being flown to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu in critical condition. On Tuesday, Wagner said, the victim was doing better but “might have long-term damage/injury.”
Young first appeared in District Court on Dec. 18, 2017. At that time, defense counsel requested to suspend proceedings until a mental health examination could take place. A hearing regarding the exam was scheduled for Jan. 17.
According to court records, the doctor doing the exam was unable to complete the report after falling ill. The doctor’s report is now due on Feb. 14.
Since Young was indicted by a grand jury, Deputy Prosecutor Kate Deleon said, the District Court case will be discharged once the defendant is served with the indictment.
The next court hearing is Feb. 21.
Young remains in custody at Hawaii Community Correctional Center with a bail amount of $281,000.
I think she needs a new hairdresser.
You know the funny part when I first came to the Island (first a visit, then renting and now owning) of all those times I NEVER thought to myself all the beauty and attractions here….Let’s go down to “Old A” and see the old runway. Was that not a “Tent City” when this occurred ( I could be incorrect here)? If this does not provide what a bad environment those homeless camps create, what would it take a mass murder? Is there not a rape case going resulting from the fray of this area? I know its cleaned up but what were they all doing on those camps….I think we know just nobody wants to say it because it would not be Politically Correct!
Just think if she was a Ice head local with 19 felonies she would be on the streets already with a bail amount at $10.000
