A high surf advisory is in effect for the Big Island’s north- and east-facing shores through 6 p.m. Friday.
A north swell fueling the surf is expected to decline Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
Forecasters said the waves along east-facing shores would range in height from 15 feet to 20 feet tonight and decline to 12 feet to 18 feet on Friday. Along east-facing shores, forecasters said waves would range in height from 8 feet to 10 feet tonight and lower to 5 feet to 8 feet on Friday.
Forecasters also warned of surges and breaking waves at Hilo Harbor.
The service categorized the surf’s impact as “moderate,” warning of strong breaking waves and strong longshore and rip currents that can make swimming difficult and dangerous. The service cautioned beachgoers, swimmers and surfers to heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and to exercise caution.
