The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for the leeward side of Hawaii Island effective through 5:15 p.m.
At 2:06 p.m., radar showed heavy showers and thunderstorms spanning from Puuanahulu to Honaunau, according to the service. Other areas noted in the flood advisory were Keahole Point, Waikoloa, Waikii, Kailua-Kona, Keauhou and Captain Cook.
Forecasters said the advisory may extended beyond 5:15 p.m.
The service cautions people to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding. Rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions because of ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.
