League extends application deadline
Hawaii Women’s Legal Foundation has extended the deadline for accepting applications for its 2013 grant requests from organizations and projects that help to improve the legal status and welfare of women and children in Hawaii. The foundation considers grant applications twice a year. The deadline for receipt of grant applications for November consideration has been extended until Friday.
Halloween craft class is Oct. 28
Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation in Kona is taking registration for a free Halloween craft class for youth ages 5 to 14. Participants will create personlized masks for Halloween.
The class will be from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Kekuaokalani Gymnasium in Kailua-Kona.

Women’s status discussed Friday
Hawaii County Committee on the Status of Women meets at 10 a.m. Friday at the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney in Hilo and via video conference at the Office of the Prosceuting Attorney conference room, 81-980 Halekii St., Suite 150, Kealakekua.

County offers zumba classes
Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation is offering zumba fitness classes from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at Hale Halawai in Kailua-Kona. Tina Watai, a certified group instructor, will lead the class.

Domestic violence awareness event planned Saturay
A domestic violence awareness event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday begins with a walk from Kona International Market to the corner of Makalapua Boulevard and Queen Kaahumanu Highway for sign waving. Participants will then return to Kona International Market for a vigil of remembrance and support for victims and survivors of domestic violence. Some signs will be available or participants may bring their own.They are also asked to wear purple clothing.
The event is sponsored by the Family Violence Inter-Agency Committee-West Hawaii, Girl Scout Troop 742/GSUSA and the Neighborhood Place of Kona. Call 895-4798 for message suggestions or more information. Event is from 9am-12pm. Oct. 19.
Konawaena seniors plan fundraiser
The Konawaena High School senior class is holding a pancake breakfast and fundraiser from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the school cafeteria. A silent auction, country store, bake sale and rummage sale are planned. Donations can be made to the Konawaena High School Calss of 2014 or dropped off at the main office.

Marine Corps League meets Saturday
The Camp Tarawa Detachment 1255 of the Marine Corps League meets Saturday at Banjy’s Paradise Bar and Grill at the Waikoloa Village Golf Course. A “no-host” lunch at 11:30 a.m. is followed by a 1 p.m. business meeting. All serving, retired or reserve Marines and Navy corpsmen and their spouses are invited to attend. Dress is resort casual.
