State bar association meets in Waikoloa
Nearly 400 legal professionals and community leaders attended Hawaii State Bar Association’s annual convention and meeting at Hilton Hawaiian Village.
The event included continuing legal education seminars, an announcement of election results for the 2014 board, as well as the ceremonial swearing in of 2014 president, Calvin Young.
Young, a partner with the firm Ayabe, Chong, Nishimoto, Sia, & Nakamura, is an active member of the 7,000 member Hawaii State Bar Association. Gregory Markham will serve as president-elect, Jodi Kimura Yi will serve as vice president, Mark Murakami will serve as treasurer and Ronette Kawakami will serve as secretary on the 2014 board of directors.

Brewery selects advertising agency
Kona Brewing Co. has selected Duncan/Channon as its advertising agency of record to lead the company’s strategic branding and creative efforts with the goal of increasing growth.
As agency of record, Duncan/Channon will create national integrated marketing campaigns, including TV, digital, out-of-home and nontraditional media. The first campaign will launch in the second quarter of 2014.
Farnham hosts
network program
Kailua-Kona actor and filmmaker Alex Farnham has been hired by The Discovery Network to create content for and host its new digital offering “Animalist News.”
The new program, available on The Discovery Network website and YouTube, provides breaking news stories, viral videos and interviews on animal topics.
Farnham is a graduate of Hualalai Academy in Kailua-Kona and The Los Angeles Film School. He rose to fame locally with his YouTube channel, DamItsGood808. Including a combination of comic sketches, original music videos and parodies of popular culture, he has created more than 400 original videos, which have garnered more than 40 million views and more than 200,000 subscribers.

Atlantis marks
25 years in business
Atlantis Submarines celebrates its 25th anniversary in Hawaii this year.
The business opened in 1988 in Kailua-Kona, where Atlantis carried its first guests into the depths of Kailua Bay, descending more than 100 feet. More than 40,000 submarine dives later, Atlantis is still showcasing the undersea sights of Kailua Bay, highlighted by a 25-acre coral reef garden, schools of colorful fish, and two sunken vessels transformed into thriving marine habitats.

HELCO introduces
new logo
Hawaii Electric Light Co. customers will begin seeing a new logo on the company’s signs, vehicles and mailings.
Hawaiian Electric president and CEO Dick Rosenblum said the logo is a symbol of the company’s commitments to lower electric bills, improve service and develop more low-cost clean energy.
The cost of designing and introducing the logo will not be included in customers’ electric rates.

Moss awarded
for kitchen design
Trans-Pacific Design’s Susan Moss recently won an award for the design of a Hawaii Island kitchen at the American Society of Interior Designers Design Excellence Awards held in Honolulu.
Moss designed the kitchen in the Hawaiian bungalow style, laying out the kitchen and developing the location of all the appliances, lighting and cabinetry and selecting all the finishes. Photos of this kitchen are available at trans-pacificdesign.com.
The contractor for the project was Quality Builders; the cabinetmaker was Gary’s Cabinets and the architect was Kurt Klimt.
Facility tests
scuba cylinders
Founded when the retail portion of Sandwich Isle Divers closed its doors, Kona Hydrostatic Testing is an authorized testing facility for scuba cylinders, fire extinguishers and paintball cylinders.
Such cylinders must be hydrostatic tested every three to five years and scuba cylinders should be visually inspected at least once a year. Kona Hydrostatic Testing also does visual inspections on scuba cylinders and repair of scuba equipment.
Owner Timothy Ewing has been testing cylinders for the past four years and has been inspecting cylinders for more than 15 years.
