Kona Orchid Society meets Friday
Kona Orchid Society will hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Friday at the Hualalai Academy Bridge Building.
Lloyd Fischel of Fragrant Orchids in Haiku, Maui, will speak on “General and Specific Orchid Cultures, Dealing with Pests and Mold, and More.”
A potluck will begin at 6:15 p.m., attendees should bring a dish to share. There will also be a showing of orchids and a drawing for orchids.

Free teen fitness classes offered
Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, along with the Club Fitness Center, is taking registration for a free fitness class for teens ages 13 to 18. Classes will be held from 6 to 7:15 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays. Registration will run through Oct. 11, with classes starting Oct. 14. Registration is limited.

Festival of Aloha
slated for Sunday
Cultural festivities are planned during the Festival of Aloha from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel.
The free event is geared to families and offers keiki activities, lei making, a craft fair, food, hula and music performances.

Shooting competition tests speed, accuracy
Kahuku Practical Pistol Shooting Club will hold a steel challenge match Sunday.
Steel challenge is a shooting competition with emphasis on speed and accuracy. The match will use mostly .22 caliber pistols and rifles.

Golden teaching
Thai cooking class
Abbey Golden will lead “Soup & Salad — Thai Style” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 15 at Hale Halawai in Kailua-Kona. Participants will learn to make a spicy Thai stuffed avocado and tom yum — a hot and sour soup. The meal will end on a sweet note with raw coconut macaroons.
