‘Artists of Hawaii’
opens Sept. 19
Eleven artists were given 10 months to create works for the Honolulu Museum of Art’s juried exhibition, Artists of Hawaii, which runs Sept. 19 to Nov. 24.
Island-based artists were invited to submit images of 10 to 12 pieces to provide an in-depth look at their work. These artists will present their oeuvres: Amber Aguirre and John Ferdico, both of Hawaii Island; Roberta Griffith of Kauai; Drew Broderick, Clarence Chun, Kandi Everett, Yumiko Glover, Ryan Higa, Chris Ritson, Russell Sunabe and William Williams III, all of Oahu.
The selection committee comprised museum director Stephan Jost, deputy director Allison Wong, contemporary art curator James Jensen, and former associate contemporary art curator Inger Tully. Over the past several months, Jensen worked with each artist to develop and select a group of works to show with the other selected artists.
The exhibition is part of the museum’s ongoing commitment to support local artists through all four of its venues. While the number of artists selected for Artists of Hawaii has decreased from previous years, the programs for Hawaii-based artists will increase.

Kapiolani holds contest to decorate construction site
Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children is seeking original artwork to be showcased at the construction site of its new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit building on Oahu.
Keiki patients and their families, as well as children in Kapiolani’s community 18 years or younger, may submit original art for the 2013 Kapiolani Construction Wall Art Project, depicting what Kapiolani Medical Center means to them. Artwork might feature a favorite doctor or nurse, Tucker the therapy dog, beads of courage or anything else that might inspire other children when they think of the pediatric hospital. Colorful entries are encouraged, in any media, including crayon, markers, paint and construction paper.
Artwork is due by Sept. 13. Entries must include a completed submission form available at KapiolaniGift.org/keikiart. Winning artists will be notified by Oct. 11.
