The Hawaii Island Landscape Association will host a cultural event from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Friday at the Kalaemano Interpretive Center at Kukio Resort.
A discussion of how natural plant fiber and human culture go hand-in-hand when looking at the history of people in an isolated island setting will be led by Gary Eoff, Flynn Baggs, Kaipo Kalus for catching fish, as well as octopus will be displayed.
Presenters will also talk about the future of shoreline conservation in West Hawaii.

NOAA to host grant-writing workshop
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Pacific Regional Grants Cooperative is hosting a grant-writing workshop — to respond to NOAA grant solicitations — from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. It will be held in the Community Hale at the West Hawaii Civic Center in North Kona. Lunch will be provided.
Participants will learn to identify funding opportunities and better understand the administration’s grant process. They will also learn how the administration evaluates grants as well as tips and resources to improve their applications.

Kailua Village tour slated Thursday
Hannah Kihalani Springer will lead a free walking tour of Kailua Village Thursday, hosted by Kai Opua Canoe Club, in conjunction with the 2013 Queen Liliuokalani Outrigger Canoe Races.
Springer, a kamaaina of the ahupuaa of Kaapulehu will guide attendees through various historic sites along Alii Drive, including Ahuena Heiau, Kona Inn, Mokuaikaua Church and Hulihee Palace.
The three-hour tour begins at 9 a.m. at Kamakahonu Beach, on the northern side of Kailua Pier.
